Exploring the Amazon has been a life long dream and I was giddy like a little kid on Christmas morning to get to be there. We explored the River and it’s tributaries by way of a classic 19th century style boat and did some hiking in the rain forest, looking for critters. Piranhas aren’t particularly easy to catch, but we managed to fish up a bucket full and cooked ‘em up for dinner. Dang good eatin’! In Rio De Janeiro we visited Ipanema Beach, went to a Paul McCartney concert, and visited the “Christ The Redeemer” statue, one of the 7 modern wonders of the world. Aboard the Belmond Andean Explorer train we rode through the high Andes Mountains of Peru, sometimes reaching dizzying altitudes of 16K feet. With our own cabin, a dining car, and a saloon car complete with a guy playing grand piano, we were livin’ in high style. The train eventually delivered us to Machu Picchu, fulfilling one of Katy’s life long dreams. We adore Latin America, from Mexico all the way down; the people, the scenery and architecture, food, music. What’s not to love?

Jalan Crosslandtag:jalancrossland.com,2005:Post/73023492023-11-11T12:53:30-07:002024-01-24T11:53:04-07:00End of Season 2023
Gig season 2023

…is done and done. I was able to participate in shows at Jackson Hole WY’s Center For The Arts and Sheridan WY’s WYO Theater before the tour moved on to Laramie WY without me, due to prior commitments. It was so good to hang with my family of Wyoming musicians with whom I only rarely get to cross paths. The fun onstage with the audiences was only surpassed by the ridiculousness backstage. As much as I regret missing out on the miserable torment of Wyoming winter and it’s annual Hard Drinking & Depression Festival, I do feel that migrating with the birdies to Mexico has been a responsible decision. Katy, our dog Roadie, and I are managing. I have joined a mariachi band to make ends meet. We play nightly beneath the cathedral on the town square for tips and mezcal.
John Jackson flew out to catch my last 2022 recital at the Custer Beacon in South Dakota. We became fast friends with much in common and a similar interest in losing money in the entertainment industry. As such, we decided to partner up in a Manager/Artist conspiracy to take over the world, one bar gig at a time. JEM is a family owned and operated business out of Burbank, CA. They are real nice folks and I’m excited to dive into 2023 with them in my corner.

Well, I reckon that’s it for summer 2022. For 6 months I rolled my weary wheels off, up and down the lonesome highway, bringing clamorous banjo revelry to all who could stand it. And it was a deliriously good time. Thank you, dear music presenters, who thought it advantageous to bring me to your town. Thank you, dear friends and fans, who felt it reasonable to attend the festivities. I sure appreciate you all. We’ll do it again next year, once the snow melts back to whatever plane of hell it came from. I leave you with a photo of my good ol’ ‘57, which has been a joy on summer evenings around home, cruising the back roads with a 6 pack, a cigar, and some rock n roll on the stereo. God, I’ll miss summer, and all of ya’ all. Winter well, friends.
Jalan Crosslandtag:jalancrossland.com,2005:Post/70900192022-10-27T13:43:26-06:002022-11-18T15:32:28-07:00WyoFolk Project
WyoFolk Project

It was my honor and privilege to be invited to the home of my friend and esteemed musician, Aaron Davis (Screen Door Porch, Aaron Davis And The Mystery Machine), to contribute a song to the WyoFolk Project album. The project is a compilation of new material by Wyoming singer-songwriters. We recorded my track, “Standing Up Again”, at his beautiful home/studio down the Hoback, South of Jackson Hole. It was great fun to be in the recording studio again, as it has been a number of years since my last studio endeavor. It was also most agreeable to take numerous breaks between sessions to sit out on Aarons porch, drinking some damn fine bourbon, watching it rain, and catching up with an old friend.

There have been a lot of fun and fabulous gigs this summer, but one of my most favorite was the new Yellowstone Harvest Festival in Livingston, MT. The festival itself was expertly run, in a gorgeous locale, with an enthusiastic and respectably-sized turnout for a first year festival. The sound was great, the weather was great, but the best thing about it all was seeing old friends. Wonderful to catch up with Kelly Estes, the festival presenter; Jerry Mullen, the sound guy; Rebecca Frasier with Hit & Run Bluegrass; and Martha Scanlan, formerly of The Reeltime Travelers. The photo is of Martha and I, engaged in drunken philosophizing beside the porta johns, a favorite gathering place for musicians during festival season.
Jalan Crosslandtag:jalancrossland.com,2005:Post/69939522022-06-14T15:42:27-06:002022-06-14T15:42:27-06:00Back to my old tricks!
Back to my old tricks!

The chicken necks are wringin’ and the toenails are flying’ again, as the Summer ‘22 gig season is back up and tappin’ on all 8. This year’s music season will span May through October. I’ll be descending upon all of the old familiar haunts, as well as a number of new ones that I am excited about. Along with the fan favorites, handful of new songs are on the list, as well as revivals of some of my old ones that haven’t been played live in years. New T-shirts, new Chicken Truckin’ hats, and a new haircut to boot! For info on the gigs and the merch and anything else of interest, look no farther than the other pages of this website.
Forgive me friends, I didn’t publish a lot of NEWS this year. This is because, well, there was no time to do so because I was running up and down the highway like a crazy person, playing music for everybody. Playing music is better than publishing news anyway. After the slow 2020 season, 2021 was fast, fun, and fabulous! There were lots of shows and most of them were packed with enthusiastic revelers. If I could go back and do it again, I surely would, but we’ll just have to wait until next year. For all of you who booked me into your venues, or came out to enjoy the music and mirth, thank you so much. I love ya’. I’m going to disappear now to try to make up some more songs. Have a tolerable winter. We’ll get together again when the Paintbrush is bloomin’ and the Meadowlarks are singin’ and all the world smells of fresh sheepshit.

Katy and I (Katy is girlfriend, not camel depicted) snuck out on an end of season field trip to Egypt and Jordan. We visited Cairo and the Great Pyramids of Giza, temples in Luxor and Aswan, as well as floated up the Nile on a sailboat for 5 days. Then, In Jordan, we visited Amman, Aqaba on the Red Sea, The Dead Sea, and we camped with Bedouin and rode camels in the Wadi Rum, which is the desert where The Martian, Star Wars, and Dune were filmed! It was all pretty bad ass. It’s nice to get out of town. A man offered me 1000 camels for my girlfriend. I didn’t really know the going rate, so declined. Who would feed them anyway?

After 12 years, 4 (of 8 total) albums, and innumerable performances together, Jalan and his long suffering band must bid farewell to one another at last. The parting is due to circumstances beyond their control and on entirely friendly terms. Their last show is in Lander, Wyoming, on Sept 22, 2017. For further details, see the website’s “SHOWS” schedule. They wish to thank you all for the fun, support, and friendship that you have shared with them for all of these years.
Jalan Crossland releases new album “No Cause For Despair”

Jalan Crossland released his new album (his seventh), No Cause For Despair on June 20. The album features 11 new compositions and marks his return to the studio with his bandmates along with a few guest instrumental specialists.

Original drummer/percussionist Pat Madsen rejoins the trio (he first played on Trailer Park Fire & Other Tragedies), and long time sideman/bassist/collaborator Shaun Kelley contributed production and arrangement skills, as well as strings and vocals.

The album is the third project Jalan has recorded at Thunderground Sound Studios in Laramie WY (recording engineer Dan Tinker – mixing engineer James Stevens – mastering engineer Jim Wilson).

Crossland recently completed a solo tour through the Midwest where he made debut appearances at the 4th annual John Hartford Memorial Festival on May 29/30 (he’s already been invited back for next year’s festival) and wrapped up the tour at the UnVarnished Music Festival in SW Minnesota. The new album is now available on his website.
Jalan Crosslandtag:jalancrossland.com,2005:Post/62037552020-02-04T18:18:48-07:002020-02-04T18:18:48-07:00featured in New York Times
JUNE 23, 2013 - BOISE, ID

Torrential downpours caused temporary flooding but didn’t dampen the spirits of the songwriters or festival goers at the 2013 Key West Songwriters Festival. It was an often rainy week, but none of Jalan’s shows were cancelled. Not to say there weren’t weather issues.

On Thursday patrons braved ankle deep rain water in the brick courtyard at Smokin’ Tuna Saloon to find safe haven in the detached, but covered, cabanna/bar for the venue’s opening show of the week.

Jalan Crossland was honored at the 2012 Wyoming Governor’s Arts Awards annual gala and ceremony held February 8, 2013 in the Grand Ballroom of Little America Resort in Cheyenne. The Ten Sleep resident is only the second musician to receive the Governor’s Arts Award in the last decade.

Governor Matt Mead presented the award which recognizes artists, arts organizations and patrons who have displayed excellence in the arts, as well as outstanding service and dedication to the arts in Wyoming.

The Wyoming Arts Council honored two other recipients this year as well – Advocacy for Visual Arts (AVA) Center in Gillette and visual artist and educator Lynn Mumms of Casper. The gala event was attended by more than 500 patrons, artists, legislators and previous winners. Crossland has recorded six albums and performs solo and with his band throughout the year.

Wyoming based singer-songwriter Jalan Crossland journeyed to Key West for the Better Angels Key West Songwriters Festival presented by BMI. The 17th annual Songwriters Festival featured more than 100 top songwriters, staged at an array of the island’s most popular drinking holes and hot spots, bookended by full-band concerts. Informal adaptations of Nashville’s signature in-the-round acoustic showcases dominated much of the schedule, while an event-capping street concert added an enticing Mardi Gras spirit to the mix.

The festival spanned five days and nights, from May 2 thru 6, with over 30 free shows on 25+ stages. While this was Jalan’s first appearance at the Key West festival, he’s no stranger to a BMI stage. In mid-April Crossland performed on the BMI Songwriter Stage at the French Quarter Festival, his second appearance at the New Orleans festival in as many years. In all, he played five performances at the Key West festival.

Wyoming based singer-songwriter Jalan Crossland is journeying to Key West, having been invited to perform at the Better Angels Key West Songwriters Festival presented by BMI. The 17th annual Songwriters Festival will feature more than 100 top songwriters, staged at an array of the island’s most popular drinking holes and hot spots, bookended by full-band concerts.
While this is Jalan’s first appearance at the Key West festival, he’s no stranger to a BMI stage. In mid-April Crossland performed on the BMI Songwriter Stage at the French Quarter Festival, his second appearance at the New Orleans festival in as many years. He’s slated for three perfomances at the Key West festival:
Thursday (May 3) with Suzi Ragsdale @ Old Town Manor
Friday (May 4) with Brent Burns, Bobby Weinstein, Roger Sovine, Phoenix Mendoza, Patrice Pike, Todd Taylor and James Slater @ Smokin’ Tuna Saloon
Saturday (May 5) with Matt Ramsey, Dillon Dixon, Ben Donaher, Walker Hayes and Jeff Black @ Ibis Bay Resort

Crossland, who resides in Ten Sleep WY (population 328) has released six albums since 2000 and has developed a fiercely loyal following fueled by his musicianship (he’s a former flat-picking champion) and his talent as an entertainer. This year he’s playing all his concerts as solo performances in support of his newest release, Portrait of a Fish.

Jalan Crossland Unveils “Portrait”

Jalan’s sixth album, Portrait of a Fish, is an enjoyable and eclectic 12 song collection and in a way the album reflects a return to his early recording roots. Like Poorboy Shanty (his second album) and Moonshiner (his third), Portrait of a Fish is rootsy and honest, with greater emphasis on performance and less on production. Those earlier outings were more sparsely produced than his more recent full band offerings.

But Portrait of a Fish goes beyond that simple comparison. Yes, it’s a “solo project” in the truest sense – just Jalan and his guitar or banjo, performing each song in a simple no frills setting – no overdubs, no studio “hocus pocus”, no nonsense. More than that however, the album demonstrates his growth as an artist. Tracking the album, one can sense his confidence as a performer and maturity as a musician.

The album opens with the title cut, a light-hearted and clever tale of a fish in search of a painter to render his (or her – with fish how can you tell?) portrait. His banjo-loving fans will appreciate the appearance of the banjo in three of the first five songs, as well as being the featured instrument on the album’s lone instrumental, “Colored Aristocracy”. His guitar prowess is first revealed in “Joanne”, where he adeptly delivers a minute-and-a-half guitar movement. Crossland leads the listener through this set of original compositions, traditional songs, and the occasional cover tune. Not surprisingly, Crossland commences the album on a crescendo with his version of Gordon Lightfoot’s “Don Quixote” that features another extended (three-minutes-plus) guitar movement.

Portrait of a Fish embodies the core sensibilities of Jalan Crossland the artist. As a storyteller, musician and entertainer, Crossland delivers on all counts. Long time fans and first time listeners alike will appreciate the unforced grace of this album, which is perhaps his most spectacular collection to date.
Jalan Crosslandtag:jalancrossland.com,2005:Post/62036232020-02-04T16:18:42-07:002020-02-04T16:20:25-07:00APRIL 9, 2011- NEW ORLEANS, LA
APRIL 9, 2011- NEW ORLEANS, LA

Jalan Crossland was tapped to perform at the French Quarter Festival 2011 in New Orleans. He was featured on the BMI Songwriter Stage in the courtyard at The Historic New Orleans Collection. Jalan Crossland is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter from Wyoming. Fueled by his live performances and self-released albums, he’s built a loyal regional following and is touring in support of his latest project, Driftwood Souls.

While Jalan’s primary tool of musical expression is the guitar, he’s equally comfortable playing the 5-string and 6-string banjo. This was his first appearance at the French Quarter Festival, now marking its 28th anniversary.
Jalan Crossland
