Driftwood
Souls
Is Jalan Crossland's fifth album. It was recorded in the fall of 2009
at Laramie, Wyoming's Thunderground Sound studio. This is essentially
a trio album, on which Jalan collaborates with Shaun Kelley (basses,
cello, vocals) and Andy Phreaner (drums, tambourine, shaker, chain,
anvil, vocals). The only outside musician is vocalist Mandy Bohlender
(of J Shogren and the Shanghai'd), who appears on two tracks (Mama was
a Roughneck and Sweet Lovin Booze). Dan Tinker engineered and mixed
the tracks, and the album was mastered at Airshow mastering by Jim Wilson
(Richard Thompson, James McMurtry, The Gourds).
As
a concept, "driftwood souls" are people whose "roots
never seem to hold the snow". They are emotional vagabonds, whose
roaming leads them to behaviors that are shall we say, not ultimately
in their best interests...
